Dr. Fitzsimmons grew up in Connecticut. He was third of 11 children. He graduated with a BS from the University of Dayton in 1976. He received his dental degree from the Ohio State University in 1980 and started his own dental practice. He is a lifelong member of the American Dental Association, the Ohio Dental Association, and the WD Miller Dental Association, of which he is past president.
Dr. Fitzsimmons was the chairman of the finance committee at Newark Catholic High School for 12 years, and Vice President of the school board for the same period. He was president of the Newark Catholic Jr. High Athletic Association for 3 years. He is currently Chairman of the Finance Committee at Blessed Sacrament Church and has been for the last 19 years. He is vice chairman of The Look Up in which he volunteers three hours a month to the free dental clinic. His one and only hobby is running the family cattle farm of 146 acres, which he says keeps him feeling young.
